REUTERS/Pat Little REUTERS/Pat Little By David DeKok | HARRISBURG, Pa. HARRISBURG, Pa. Testimony is to begin on Monday in a whistleblower lawsuit filed by a former Penn State assistant football coach who says the university fired him after learning he was a witness against Jerry Sandusky, the former coach later convicted of molesting boys on and off campus. Michael McQueary, 42, says Penn State placed him on administrative leave in the autumn of 2011, soon after he was identified as a key witness against Sandusky in one of the Pulitzer Prize-winning articles about the scandal by Harrisburg Patriot-News reporter Sara Ganim. McQueary was later fired from his $140,000-a-year coaching job and was ostracized by friends and colleagues, according to court papers. Alone among employees caught up in the investigation, Pennsylvania State University refused to pay his legal fees. McQueary, who has accused the university of defamation and misrepresentation as well as a whistleblower charge, is seeking more than $8 million in compensatory and punitive damages. The lawsuit is being heard in Centre County Court of Common Pleas in Bellefonte, near the main campus of Penn State. A jury was selected last week.

Students were able to trade in or get a new dress in time for the annual homecoming dance. Homecoming can be expensive, Mount Vernon High School Principal Rod Merrell said. If we can share the love, it just takes some of the burden off our families. Mount Vernon High School held its first dress swap three years ago, Smith said. We want to remove as many barriers as possible that prevent (students) from participating, he said. Though the swap is a one-day event, Smith said once word started getting around donations of dresses have poured in year-round. They just keep showing up, Smith said. I think it tapped into something with people. It makes people feel good to try and bring joy to other people. Last year about 35 students participated in the swap, Smith said. I consider that a success, he said. Maybe thats 35 kids that wouldnt have felt good otherwise. As Smiths classroom was being set up for the swap, junior Briseida Cardenas said she didnt have a dress picked out for Saturdays homecoming dance, but she did have her eye on a bright coral-colored dress hanging from Smiths wall. She said she was planning to bring her friends to the swap.
